Description

The Broadcast begins as an artifact of another age: a monumental transmission tower rising above a Cold War landscape, projecting its signal with the confidence and authority of propaganda. On a second look, the architecture becomes uncertain. The tower’s structure reveals the anatomy of a snail—its shell embedded within the machinery, its eyestalks becoming antennae—until it is no longer clear where organism ends and infrastructure begins.

The work explores our assumption that communication technologies are instruments under human control. The figures below appear to operate the station, yet the second reading suggests another possibility: perhaps they are not using the organism at all. Perhaps the organism is using the network—and them—to extend itself. We believe we are broadcasting. The question is what, or who, is actually sending the signal.
