The original painting, 'The Slave Market' (Le Marché d’esclaves) was completed in 1866 by French artist Jean-Léon Gérôme. It portrays a scene set in West Asia or North Africa, where a man examines the teeth of a nude Abyssinian woman in the context of the Barbary slave trade.
