Senbaku is a creative coder and generative artist based in Japan.Working mostly in p5.js, she depicts city dwellers as ghost-like figures she calls Obake, using warm color palettes to explore their inner lives.,For Senbaku, the ghost motif expresses what is invisible, drawing on the isolation she felt as a young student in Tokyo.
She studied ethnography and arts management in graduate school and later worked at an art gallery, but lost that job when she became pregnant. Raising her child left her isolated, and she turned to handmade crafts, drawing and learning Python to reconnect with the world. She discovered Processing after buying a micro:bit to use with her child, and still remembers drawing her first circle on the screen.In 2021 she began releasing NFT works made with function draw() and OpenProcessing's Crayon Codes. She has since exhibited with KUMALEON and in the 2023 group show “Proof of X — Blockchain As A New Medium For Art”.
In 2024 Senbaku released With you, a series of 65 works shown in the group exhibition “Patterns of Flow” on Feral File and at NEORT++ in Tokyo, curated by Yusuke Shono and Alex Estorick.,The work explores human-computer co-creation through Markov chains and the Monte Carlo method, the same techniques used by the Japanese computer artist Hiroshi Kawano in his 1960s computer art, while keeping the soft colors and forms characteristic of her practice.
