Riccardo Malleo is an Italian artist who creates surreal audiovisual projects, combining music composition with animation techniques such as 3D, generative systems, AI, frame-by-frame animation, glitch art and VFX compositing. His work explores dreams, memory, altered states of perception and self-discovery, with nature as a recurring theme alongside symbols drawn from Oriental traditions and reflections on the body.
Malleo discovered an interest in editing and video art while at middle school in his hometown. He then moved to Perugia, where he attended the public art high school while studying piano at the Conservatory of Music F. Morlacchi. That background as a pianist carries into his practice, where he incorporates music directly into his work and has expressed interest in live audiovisual performance. He has continued his training in VFX at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia, the national academy of cinema in Rome. There, he has worked as an on-set supervisor and post-production artist on short films produced by the institute.
His work has been screened at the “SCOPE Art Fair” in Miami via Superchief Gallery, in New York via ArtCrush Gallery, and in Tokyo via NewMediaArt and NeoShibuya. He has released work through digital art platforms including objkt.com, Foundation and Superchief. These include unnoticed ordinary traces and Hallucinogenic Plants, made with Danilo Xhema.
