Paolo Curtoni is a generative artist who uses programming languages as a primary medium, combining algorithmic structure with the unpredictability of randomness. He was born in Bologna, Italy, and is based in Barcelona, Spain. His code follows a grammatical logic of rules and symbols meant to reveal unexpected structures, sparking moments of intuitive insight he calls “revelation”.
In 2015 the retrospective “La passion selon Carol Rama” opened at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, curated by Anne Dressen. It included a site-specific installation pairing Bepi Ghiotti's photographs of Carol Rama's studio with a thirteen-minute soundtrack Curtoni composed from recordings made in the same space.,
Curtoni is a member of Colorless Green Ideas, a collective describing itself as a laboratory exploring the relation between art, language, and meaning. He released Stream of Consciousness on fxhash in 2022, generating text from a language model trained on some sixty-seven million personal stories posted to the discontinued social network Experience Project. Each mint began from a single randomly chosen seed word and threaded outward through words linked by computed semantic similarity, rendered as shifting transparencies of text and color.The same year he condensed a related idea into Blocky Times, 2,048 bytes of code published in Taper #8.Curtoni has said a generative artwork is never truly finished, since at some point it “begins to have a life of its own” in a way that is not completely controllable, and that recognizing that moment is the artist's role.Curtoni's practice sits “on the border between art, science and technology”, where language becomes shape and wave.
In 2024 Curtoni took part in “MAGBa”, Barcelona's generative art exhibition at Palo Alto, saying he sees programming as “the construction of entities with a life of their own, through a dialogue between creator and creation”.He returned in 2025 for “Beyond the Screen”, the exhibition's following edition at the same venue.That September, Art Blocks Studio released his Neural Prometheus, commissioned for the Responsive Dreams Barcelona festival. The piece draws on a training dataset described as a textual flame to generate neuron-like structures from text, evoking the myth of Prometheus to reflect on the transfer of language and thought from humans to machines.In 2026 he joined “MAGBa3 · Orígens”, a nineteen-artist exhibition at Palo Alto Barcelona marking fifty years since the magazine Computer Graphics and Art documented early computer art, with each participant reinterpreting a work from its 1976-1978 issues in black and white.
