Baku is a visual artist based in Sherbrooke, Quebec, who began working in traditional oil painting before moving into digital media. Their practice evolved toward a minimal, emotionally resonant style built around hyperrealistic, isolated figures — faces, bodies, hands — suspended in white space, creating a sense of stillness, vulnerability and dreamlike tension.
Their ongoing collection Remains grew out of a visit to the Catacombs of Paris, where they encountered human bones alongside poetry and philosophical inscriptions written to give meaning to death. They had previously studied philosophy while searching for answers about existence and mortality, and the visual references used throughout Remains come from the bones they documented inside the Catacombs.The collection has no predetermined supply. Access is granted through keys issued by Baku, with each work revealed over time as it is completed.
In another ongoing body of work, The Void, they explore a tension between dissolution and formation, erasure and emergence, built around the question of whether to sink or rise.Their work has appeared on more than 10,000 digital billboards worldwide, and their collaborations include an advertising campaign for tennis player Félix Auger-Aliassime and commissioned pieces for Binance and the paint manufacturer Pébéo.The artist Outrunyouth has credited them with proactively highlighting other artists' work through Suburbs Gallery, something few people in the community do.
