111v1ab is the alias of the digital artist and composer Marco Trevisani, who has worked across algorithmic image-making, video, and music composition since the late 1980s.,His practice treats the writing of code as the creative act itself, producing music, image, or video depending on how the algorithm runs.Trevisani studied composition in Vienna and at Stanford's CCRMA, after training at the Politecnico di Milano.,
At the Politecnico, Trevisani studied under Corrado Levi, an artist, architect, and cellist, who introduced him to the principle of “composing with errors in odd numbers”, a studied search for a conceptual error rather than an accidental one. He has said this differs from glitch art, where the error is unplanned rather than deliberately sought.Since 2010 he has developed Human ex/traits, a body of work that extracts and reinterprets what he calls the “structural pixels” of images of the human body, bending their spatial relationships to create new perspectives on the same figure.His States of Density series builds generative compositions from four algorithms that activate at random to draw dots or lines, a process he has described as a form of algorithmic action painting.
Portrait of an Endangered Species was written before the COVID-19 pandemic for a festival that was later cancelled. It eventually became a video piece incorporating artworks by other artists, including Filippo Tommasoli and Andrea Benatti, and was shown as part of a solo exhibition in late 2022. Trevisani has also composed music and sound design for theatre productions directed by Glorimar Marrero and Cristóbal Bianchi.He performs with the Puerto Rico-based electronic music collective Colectivo de Electrónica Isleña, including at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo in San Juan.He has released his algorithmic work through platforms including Teia and Objkt on Tezos, fxhash, Versum, and World of V on VeChain, including works made with a neural network-based algorithm he calls 111v.NN.
